| The medication use process is a complex system with many safeguards
in place to avoid errors that can cause patient harm. Although
there are many safeguards in place, errors do occur. Fortunately,
efforts to prevent errors continue and patient safety remains
at the forefront of the public’s and healthcare providers’
attention. Ever since the Institute of Medicine Report “To
Err is Human” was published in 1999 and the National Patient
Safety Goals were enacted, healthcare facilities have been establishing
new programs to improve medication safety. As healthcare practitioners
there are various ways to do your part in ensuring safe medication
practices.
This program will help healthcare practitioners in institutional
settings understand the medication use process and learn safe
medication practices and situations to avoid that are potential
risks for errors.
The program is divided into three learning modules. Each
module is specifically designed to target the medication use
process from the perspective of physicians, pharmacists, or
nurses.
If you are in charge of training new medical, nursing, or
pharmacy staff, competence assessment or quality assurance
programs, print the Leader's
Guide. The guide outlines the entire program
and how it can be used in your institution.
If you are viewing the program, print the Participant's
Guide for instruction on accessing the program.
The workbooks listed next to the presentations below
should be printed before starting the program. These are study
aids to be used while completing the presentations. The
Participant's Guide also has instructions on how to complete
the post test and print the statement of completion.
