Accreditation for Pharmacists

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This activity provides 1 hour (0.1 CEU) of continuing pharmacy education credit (ACPE activity #0204-0000-16-454-H04-T).

Target Audience

This continuing pharmacy education series was planned to meet the needs of pharmacy technicians in a variety of settings, and it would be particularly beneficial for pharmacy technicians, supervisors, and educators who are interested in learning about practical strategies for active involvement in pharmacy-based immunization initiatives.

Activity Content

Pharmacists have become primary providers for vaccines in many hospitals and community pharmacy practices. The role of the pharmacist in immunization programs and disease prevention has rapidly expanded. Pharmacy technicians have an equally important role to play in ensuring the safe preparation and dispensing of vaccines, as well as in assisting the pharmacist in identifying patients who may need to be immunized. This activity will provide pharmacy technicians with practical strategies for active involvement in pharmacy-based immunization initiatives.

Michael D. Hogue, Pharm.D., FAPhA, FNAP, is Department Chair and Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Hogue has extensive practice experience in ambulatory care with particular emphasis in indigent care. He consults with hospitals and health systems throughout the United States related to strategies for improving immunization rates. He also has practice experience in managed care, community pharmacy, and home infusion.

Dr. Hogue received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from Samford University in Birmingham, and he completed an executive management residency with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in Washington, DC. He has authored numerous articles, book chapters, and books, primarily in the areas of pharmacy management and immunizations.

Dr. Hogue is a nationally recognized leader in pharmacy in the area of immunizations. For the past 16 years, he has been involved with educating and training tens of thousands of pharmacists in the area of vaccines. Dr. Hogue is a member of the APhA Board of Trustees, and recently he was elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID). Dr. Hogue is an active member of several professional pharmacy organizations, including APhA, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, National Community Pharmacists Association, and American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, as well as the Alabama Pharmacy Association. Dr. Hogue was recognized by his state association in 2010 with the President’s Award for leadership, and he also received Faculty Member of the Year honors. He is a fellow of APhA and a fellow of the National Academies of Practice.

Methods and Format

This activity is available in three formats:

Participants must complete the entire activity, take the activity assessment and evaluation to receive continuing education credit. A minimum score of 70% is required on the test for credit to be awarded. A copy of the assessment test is provided as a study aid in the handout. CE credit will be reported directly to CPE Monitor. The estimated time to complete this activity is 1 hour (allow additional time to complete the assessment and evaluation).
