Activity Content
The need for Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) is well established, but many hospitals are unsure about where to begin or how to start a formalized program. Faculty will review goals for a successful interprofessional ASP team, define stewardship activities that will have a positive impact on patient care, and discuss data that should be collected for meaningful outcomes and metrics. The information discussed includes ideas for hospitals with limited resources. Advice on how to start an ASP in a hospital that does not have a staff infectious diseases physician will also be provided.
Learning Objectives
After attending this application-based educational activity, participants should be able to
- Identify key responsibilities of an interdisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) team.
- Describe how process and outcomes measurements can be used to demonstrate the value of an ASP to health-system administrators.
- Examine four guiding principles for antimicrobial stewardship.
