Activity Content
A variety of appropriate diabetic treatment regimens exist, and as a result, clinicians often face challenges in making treatment decisions for specific patients. During this activity, faculty will address some of these challenges from differing perspectives. Controversial topics will include sulfonylureas and cardiovascular disease, metformin in patients with renal dysfunction, clinical considerations with incretin agents, and avoiding noninsulin therapies in hospitalized diabetic patients.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this application-based continuing education activity, participants should be able to
- Describe the benefits and risks of using traditional oral agents (e.g., sulfonylureas, metformin) in the management of type 2 diabetes.
- Given a patient scenario, devise an appropriate diabetes management plan that includes newer therapies.
- Summarize the rationale for avoiding the use of noninsulin therapies to manage hospitalized diabetic patients.
