Revisiting Best Practices in IV Preparation and Administration Post Shortages: Coming Out of the Storm

A Promotional Theater conducted at the 2018 ASHP Summer Meetings & Exhibition

Activity Overview

Because small volume parenterals (SVPs) are the foundation of basic intravenous (IV) compounding for hundreds of drugs that require further dilution, shortages of SVPs force health systems to make administrative and clinical decisions that facilitate management and conservation of IV products. Although necessary in the short term, many of these changes may not be ideal from a safety and clinical perspective. As the availability of products changes, it is important for health systems to reevaluate practices to ensure best practices, now and in the future.

In this activity, the faculty shares their insight into the patient safety dilemmas in IV preparation and administration related to drug shortages, as well as administrative needs in managing shortages. Lessons learned and strategies for developing key design and process changes in IV preparation and administration to ensure best practices and to prepare for future shortages will be addressed.
